Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Looking to end a five-game losing streak, Central Baptist College women's basketball hosted the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State this afternoon in an American Midwest Conference clash at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (10-8, 3-6 AMC) trailed 17-5 in the first quarter and came back to defeat HSSU (4-10, 1-8 AMC) 59-54 in a tight game.

Aminata Seck had a record setting day inside Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC used a strong showing in the second quarter to take the lead, holding the Hornets to five points in the second.

GAME FLOW

Harris-Stowe started quickly, racing out to a 17-5 lead with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter. Neither team would score for the next 1:07 until Lydia York hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 17-7. A made layup from Seck with 1:56 left made it 17-9 and a layup by Diana Rivera made it 17-11 and that ended the first quarter. HSSU extended the lead to 19-11 13 seconds into the second quarter before a layup from Alexis Augustus made it 19-13. The two teams would trade free throws to make it 20-14 with 7:29 left. From there, CBC would close the half on a 17-2 run to lead 31-22 at the break.

The Lady Mustangs quickly stretched the lead to 13 early in the third quarter and Harris-Stowe never got closer than eight, which was the lead at the end of three at 46-38. The Lady Mustangs kept the lead above nine points until the 5:31 mark in the fourth quarter when the lead was trimmed to seven, but a made layup from Decker, free throws by Seck and a free throw by Vicky Duru brought the score to its final margin.

GAME NOTES

  • Seck finished the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth consecutive double-double and her 12th this season, setting a new single-season record and tying the career record

  • Augustus pitched in with 13 points off the bench
  • The Lady Mustangs now hold a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series with the Hornets
  • This marks the fifth consecutive season that CBC has reached double digits in wins, something that has never been done before
  • CBC improved to 9-2 on the season when leading at halftime
  • The Lady Mustangs are shooting over 70 percent at the free throw line this season, which would be only the second time ever that mark has been reached
