#MustangsWin! CBC Blocks Heat From Comets To Even AMC Record!

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Playing for the penultimate time at home this season, Central Baptist College volleyball hosted the Cottey Comets tonight in an American Midwest Conference match on Senior Night for Madeline Freeman inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (6-18, 5-5 AMC) won sets two, three and five over Cottey (14-14, 6-5 AMC) using strong blocking to soar past the Comets.

CBC had a combined 14 blocks (1 total, 26 assisted), the fourth highest total in a single match. Leading the way on the block were Rylie Ciremele and DaiTona Streets, who had seven each, while Avary Smith had six, Aubree Ruggles had four and Lakyn Johnson had three. Smith also led the way in kills while she and three others had double-doubles.

MATCH FLOW

CBC won the first three points of the match, but ended up falling in set one 26-24. In the second set, the Mustangs raced out again, then saw the score tied at seven before rattling off four straight points to take the lead for good and tie the match at one. In set three, neither team had a lead larger than two until CBC took a 23-20 lead on a Johnson kill. The Mustangs would win two of the final three points and take the lead 2-1. The third set went back-and-forth all the way to the end until Cottey won the final three points to set up the decisive fifth set. In the deciding set, CBC was ahead 1-0 before Cottey tied it, followed by four straight Mustang point to make it 5-1 and the lead would eventually climb to 14-3 before Cottey put some pressure on by winning five straight until the match ended on a Comet error.
