Second Quarter Costs Lady Mustangs Against Cougars

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Opening the second half of American Midwest Conference play at home this evening, Central Baptist College women's basketball hosted the Cougars of Columbia College tonight inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (3-12, 2-8 AMC) led after one quarter, but were outscored 21-6 in the second and fell to CC (18-3, 10-1 AMC) 68-49.

Caroline Citty led the way with 13 points for CBC, seven of which came on eight attempts at the free throw line, where she passed Aaliyah Block to move into fourth place on the all-time list of free throws made with 178. Lydia York was the other Lady Mustang in double figures with 11 off the bench. CBC did force 15 Cougar turnovers while committing only 11 and turned those 15 turnovers into 16 points.

GAME FLOW

Columbia scored the first two baskets of the game before CBC went on a 5-0 run thanks to baskets from Taryanna McNary and Rhys Anderson to lead 5-4 with 7:08 left in the first quarter. A Columbia three tied gave them the lead back at 7-5 before jumpers from Citty and Olivia Lambrigtsen put the Lady Mustangs back in front 9-7 with 5:23 left. Columbia tied the score at nine on the ensuing possession and retook the lead with 4:34 left before Citty hit her first two free throws to tie the game at 11 and continue a quarter-ending 6-0 run, capped by a layup from York and two more Citty free throws. The Cougars opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes to take a 17-15 lead before Lambrigtsen made another jumper to tie the score at 17. A Columbia basket with 4:46 left in the quarter put CBC down by two, and they never got that close again, as the Cougars closed the quarter on a 13-2 run to send CBC to the locker room down 32-21. Unfortunately, the deficit never dropped below double figures again.
