#MustangsWin! CBC Splits Doubleheader With Missouri Baptist

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

St. Louis, Mo. – Opening a busy week of eight games in six days, the Central Baptist College softball team took on the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University this afternoon in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader at the Chesterfield Valley Academy Athletic Complex. CBC (20-16, 8-4 AMC) would split the doubleheader, dropping game one 6-0 before winning game two 5-2 over MBU (18-12, 9-3 AMC).

Averie Ayers was dominant in the circle again, holding the Spartans offense down in game two. Tobi Finley homered in game two and Savannah Sanford went 3-3 to continue her chase of a .500 batting average on the season.

GAME ONE – MBU 6, CBC 0

The Mustangs could only muster three hits the entire game against Missouri Baptist starter Shelby Sievers. MBU scored four in the first and two in the third and that was it for them. Hannah Work started and was the tough luck loser, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with a pair of walks. Ysabella Esquivel pitched four innings of one hit relief also. Sanford, Finley and Lauren Anderson were the only Mustangs to record a hit in the game.

GAME TWO – CBC 5, MBU 2

CBC struck quickly in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead in the second, courtesy of a triple by Sanford and Finley's home run, a two-run shot and her first of the season. An RBI double by Anderson made it 4-0 in the fourth before Ayers allowed a run in the bottom half to end her scoreless innings streak at 9.2 to make it 4-1. A Heather Hoffman single in the fifth provided some insurance, making it 5-1 and MBU would score again in the bottom half to make it 5-2 before Ayers put down seven of the last eight batters to secure the win. She went a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and six Ks for win number nine this season.

GAME NOTES

  • Sanford is now batting .506 this season, with the record by a CBC player in the NAIA being .509 by Christen Kirchner in 2011
  • Finley's home run was the second of her career
  • Ayers has now thrown five complete games this season
  • Ayers also now has 52 strikeouts this season
