#MustangsWin! CBC Sweeps Ecclesia in Final Non-Conference Doubleheader

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Playing a non-American Midwest Conference opponent for the final time this season, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Royals of Ecclesia College this afternoon at City of Colleges Park. CBC (17-15) took care of business, sweeping Ecclesia (8-25) by scores of 6-4 and 10-3 in the doubleheader.

CBC got two home runs in the doubleheader, one in each game. Madi Spears homered in game one in what proved to be the deciding factor and Savannah Sanford had a huge game in game two, finishing just a triple short of the cycle.

GAME ONE – CBC 6, ECCLESIA 4

The Mustangs jumped on the Royals early, plating three in the bottom of the first to lead 3-0 after one. Heather Hoffman drove in the first run with an RBI single, which was followed by a sac fly off the bat of Lauren Anderson. Tobi Finley would cap the scoring with an RBI single of her own. Another RBI by Hoffman, this one on a fielder's choice, made it 4-0 in the second. Neither team would score again until the fifth, when Spears homered for the first time this season, a two-run blast, to make it 6-0. Ecclesia would score two in the sixth and two in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4 before Ysabella Esquivel closed the door to pick up her first save of the season. Hannah Work started and got the win, throwing two shutout innings and allowing just a hit and a walk. Esquivel threw 3.1 innings and allowed three hits while striking out three. Victoria Lasker made her debut in the circle, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits with four walks.

GAME TWO – CBC 10, ECCLESIA 3

The Mustangs would start game two exactly like game one, plating three in the first, this time on a bases clearing double by Sanford. Ecclesia would tie the score at three in the third before CBC took the lead for good in the fourth. Caroline Byers drove in a run with a single to make it 4-3 and an RBI groundout from Katie Smith made it 5-3 after four. An error in the fifth would make it 5-3 and Sanford followed the error with a two-run home run, her fourth of the season, to make it 8-3. The final runs of the game would score in the sixth, as an error made it 9-3 and an RBI groundout off the bat of Madalyn Tubbs made it 10-3. Alex Jeter started and threw two perfect innings, but did not factor in the decision. Mallory Reynolds made her debut in the circle and threw two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Maggi Huddleston was the winner, throwing two innings and allowing just a hit with two strikeouts. Emily Cole finished the game for CBC, allowing a hit and striking out two in the seventh.
