Mustangs Split With Cottey
Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director
Conway, Ark. – After moving their weekend series from Missouri back to Arkansas, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Comets of Cottey College today at City of Colleges Park. CBC (4-6) split with the Comets (2-6) losing game one 4-3 before an 11-2 run rule win in game two.
Hannah Work and Averie Ayers got the starts and both had good outings. Kirstie Blackwood had huge day at the plate, homering three times and Mollie Johnson added a dinger in game two.
GAME ONE – COTTEY 4, CBC 3
CBC was the home team in game one and neither team would score for the first two innings. In the third, Cottey took the lead with a solo home run and they would extend the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Ayers would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and would steal second on a strikeout. An infield single by Savannah Sanford put runners on the corners for Blackwood who tied the game with her first home run of the season, a three-run jack to center field to make it 3-3. A bases loaded walk in the fifth put CBC down 4-3 but the Mustangs had a chance to win in the seventh, but couldn't capitalize after loading the bases with one out. Work picked up a tough loss, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) in four innings with two walks and three Ks. Ysabella Esquivel pitched three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and striking out one with a pair of walks.
GAME TWO – CBC 11, COTTEY 2 (FIVE INNINGS)
Playing as the visitors in game two, CBC capitalized on the opportunity to bat first, plating eight runs on seven hits in the inning to lead 8-0 before Cottey even had a chance to bat. Jordyn Frederic would lead off the game with a double and Katie Smith would single to put runners on the corners. Following a stolen base, Heather Hoffman drove in the first run of the game on a groundout to make it 1-0 Mustangs. An RBI single by Blackwood would plate run number two before Johnson cleared the bases with a two-run blast to center to make it 4-0. Following a pitching change, Lauren Anderson would walk and go to third on a double by Tobi Finley. After an error loaded the bases, Victoria Lasker would plate Anderson and Finley with a single to make it 6-0. Frederic would follow Lasker with an RBI groundout to make it 7-0 and Katie Smith's triple plated the final run of the half inning. Cottey responded with a pair in the bottom half to make it 8-2 before Blackwood's second home run of the day, a solo shot, made it 9-2 in the second. CBC would make it 10-2 in third on a fielder's choice of the bat of Johnson and Blackwood would cap the scoring with her second home run of the game and third of the day, a solo shot to left field to make it 11-2. Ayers went the distance in the circle, allowing just two runs on three hits with three walks and a season high six Ks to earn win number one.
