#24 Mustangs Split on Day One of Generals Showdown

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Pineville, La. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, #24 Central Baptist College softball took on the Rams of Texas Wesleyan and the Wildcats of Louisiana Christian University today on the first day of the Generals Showdown, co-hosted by LSU-Alexandria and Louisiana Christian. #24 CBC (3-1) split the two games, beating TWU (1-1) 7-3 in game one before falling to LCU (5-1) on a walkoff, 6-5, in game two.

Hannah Work and Maggi Huddleston were the starters in the circle in the two games, but neither factored in the decision in either contest. CBC had four extra base hits on the day, all doubles, with three in game one and one in game two.

GAME ONE – CBC 7, TEXAS WESLEYAN 3

CBC scored two in the first and five in the third to put game one away early. A double by Kirstie Blackwood put CBC up 1-0 in the first and Tobi Finley would chase home Blackwood with a single to make it 2-0. Texas Wesleyan would cut into the lead with a homer in the second, but then CBC exploded in the third. The Mustangs capitalized on poor fielding, scoring three runs via errors, sandwiched around a two-run double by Lauren Anderson. TWU would add a pair in the fourth on a CBC error to make it 7-3 and that's how it remained. Work went 3.2 innings and allowed three hits and three run (two earned) with a walk and three Ks. Ysabella Esquivel picked up the win in relief, throwing the final 3.1 innings and allowing just two hits in scoreless relief while striking out two.

GAME TWO – LCU 6, CBC 5

CBC would strike quickly again in game two, scoring twice in both the first and second innings and then adding a single run in the fifth. The first run came via a stolen base and a throwing error by the LCU catcher and run number two came on a single and another error by the catcher. LCU would tie the score at two in the bottom of the first, but the Mustangs got an RBI single from Madi Spears to retake the lead followed by another error to help CBC lead 4-2 after two. A single LCU run in the third made it 4-3 and the score would stay that way until Madalyn Tubbs, who doubled in both games, scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-3. LCU, however, would win it in the seventh after reliever Averie Ayers gave up a bases loaded walk and Alex Jeter surrendered the walk off, two-run single. Huddleston went three innings and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Ayers got the loss, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with two Ks and two walks.
