#MustangsWin! CBC Opens The Show With A Victory Over Oakland City!

Kingsport, Tenn. – Playing in their final tournament of the season, Central Baptist College men's basketball was on the court at the Meadowview Marriott today for the opening game of the NAIA Basketball Showcase against the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City. CBC (2-6) used strong second half shooting to beat OCU (1-5) for their first win away from Reddin Fieldhouse this season.
Kelvin Robinson led all scorers in the game while CBC had four players finish in double figures. The Mustangs won the rebounding battle big time and outshot the Mighty Oaks from the field.
GAME FLOW
Robinson opened the scoring 25 seconds into the contest and CBC opened on an 8-0 from there over the first 2:11. The Mustang would hold the lead until OCU tied it with 2:50 left in the first half and neither team took more than a three-point advantage the rest of the half, sending the game into the break tied at 34.
Oakland City opened the second half on a quick 4-0 run to take a 38-34 lead and CBC would trail 43-37 with 17:28 left in the game. From there, CBC went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:08 to take a 48-43 lead and never trail again. OCU got the game to within one, 56-55, with 8:26 left, but a dagger three from Niles Smith with 8:10 left put CBC back up by four. The Mighty Oaks would tie the score at 59 with 6:35 left and the two teams traded baskets for the next three possessions until CBC took the lead for good with 4:52 left on a layup by Justin Van Pelt to go up 65-63.
GAME NOTES
- Robinson scored 29 points to lead all scorers, including 25 in the second half
- Van Pelt posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds
- Blake Bradshaw chipped in with a career-high 16 points
- Jordan Parker had 11
- CBC shot 54 percent from the field for the game and 66 percent (19-29) in the second half
- The win was the second all-time against the Mighty Oaks in just the third meeting between the two schools and the first since 2009
- Robinson crossed the 500 career point threshold, becoming just the 27th player in program history to get to 500 points
- The 22 made free throws were the most by the Mustangs in a game this season
- CBC had a +18 (49-31) edge on the glass
