Softball Splits With Cottey

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Nevada, Mo. – Needing a sweep to stay in a tie for first place in the American Midwest Conference, Central Baptist College softball was at Vanek Family Field today for a doubleheader against the Comets of Cottey College. CBC (27-17, 11-3 AMC) couldn't get the sweep, beating CC (27-17, 11-5 AMC) 10-8 in come from behind fashion in game one before dropping game two 3-2.

GAME ONE – CBC 10, COTTEY 8

Cottey wasted no time in taking the lead, plating two runs in the first to lead 2-0 after one. Kinley Johnson's solo home run, her 11th of the season, made it 2-1 in the second before the Comets scored four in the bottom half to lead 6-1 after two. Following a scoreless third inning by both teams, CBC began to chip away at Cottey's lead in the fourth, reducing the deficit to 6-3 courtesy of a two-run homer by Lauren Anderson, her eighth of the year. In the fifth, CBC tied the score at six thanks to a two-run double by Abi West and a double two batters later by Kori Truelove. A pinch-hit home run for Cottey in the bottom half put CBC down 8-6 after five and set up late drama for the Mustangs. In the seventh, Truelove knocked in her second run of the game with a single and, following an Anderson single, Johnson homered for the second time in the game, her 12th of the year and fifth multi home run game this season, to give CBC a 10-8 lead that Mallory Reynolds held onto in the bottom half. Reynolds earned the win in relief, surrendering just four hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts in five-and-two-thirds innings.

GAME TWO – COTTEY 3, CBC 2

Runs were at a premium in game two as Cottey grabbed the lead early again thanks to a home run in the first. A two-run homer in the second put the Comets ahead 3-0 before CBC finally got on the board in the fourth on a sac fly by Anderson to make it 3-1. In the sixth, Anderson came through again, laced a double to left center field to bring home another run and make it 3-2. CBC could not come back again, squandering a leadoff single in the seventh. Alex Jeter allowed three runs on seven hits in the loss, striking out only one.
