Mustangs Split With Cougars

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Looking to remain in a tie for first place in the American Midwest Conference, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Columbia Cougars this afternoon at City of Colleges Park. CBC (22-16, 8-2 AMC) earned a split, losing to CC (17-15, 8-6 AMC) 3-1 in game one before coming back to win game 2 11-8.

The Mustangs made history in game two, getting to double figures in runs against the Cougars for the first time ever in 24 all-time meetings. This also marks the second straight season that CBC and Columbia have split.

GAME ONE – COLUMBIA 3, CBC 1

All three of Columbia's runs came in the second inning, giving them a 3-0 lead after two. CBC would not score until the seventh when Kori Truelove laced a single down the right field line to make it 3-1. CBC had multiple runners on base in the seventh inning, but couldn't push across more than one. Hannah Work was great in the circle, throwing a complete game and scattering seven hits and three runs with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO – CBC 11, COLUMBIA 8

Columbia jumped up quickly in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning and one in the third to lead 4-0 after two-and-a-half. Jordyn Frederic put CBC on the board with her second home run of the season in the bottom of the inning and Columbia made it a 6-1 deficit in the top of the fourth before CBC's offense exploded in the bottom of the inning as they plated nine runs and sent 13 batters to the plate to take a 10-6 lead after four. Lauren Anderson hit her sixth home run of the season to open the scoring and Madeline Bruce followed that with an RBI single to make it 6-3. Abi West then tied the game with her AMC leading 13th home run, a three-run blast to continue the inning and chase starter Jazlyn Gottman from the game. Truelove would give CBC a 7-6 lead later in the inning with a single and Anderson drove in her second run of the inning with a triple to make it 8-6. Elizabeth Stoufer capped the scoring with a pinch-hit two-run home run, her first of the season. Truelove would extend the lead to 11-6 in the fifth with a double and Columbia scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to close the game. Alex Jeter got the win, scattering 11 hits and allowing eight runs (six earned) with one strikeout in a complete game.
