#MustangsWin! CBC Opens AMC Play With Sweep Of UHSP!

            St. Louis, Mo. – Opening American Midwest Conference play on the road this afternoon, Central Baptist College softball was on the field at the Affton Sports Complex for a doubleheader with the Eutectics of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis. CBC (14-14, 2-0 AMC) swept the doubleheader, pounding out 31 hits and 26 in 11-5 and 15-0 wins over UHSP (8-14, 1-5 AMC).

GAME ONE – CBC 11, UHSP 5

            UHSP jumped ahead in the first with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 before the Mustangs took their first lead in the third, plating three runs thanks to an Abi West double and a pair of errors to make it 3-1. The Eutectics would tie the score at three in the bottom half with a home run before CBC retook the lead in the fourth thanks to an RBI groundout by Jordyn Frederic and a fielder's choice off the bat of Ysabella Esquivel. With the score 5-3, UHSP scored in the bottom half and it was 5-4 after four. The Mustangs blew the game open in the fifth, scoring six runs on a two-run triple by Kori Truelove, a single by Madalyn Tubbs, a double by Esquivel, a groundout by Madeline Bruce and a double by Abi West to make it 11-4 after five. UHSP got a homer in the seventh to make it 11-5. Hannah Work did not factor in the decision, going three-and-two-thirds, allowing six hits and four runs with a walk. Mallory Reynolds got the win, throwing two-and-two-thirds, allowing one run on a hit with one strikeout. Isabella Sawyers got the final two outs, including a strikeout.

GAME TWO – CBC 15, UHSP 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

            The Mustangs scored early and often in the second game, plating a pair of first inning runs on a triple by West and an error to make it 2-0 after one. A single tally on an error made it 3-0 in the second, and on the play, Esquivel became the 15th Mustang in history with 100 runs scored in a career, and a Truelove single in the third made it 4-0. CBC busted the game open in the fourth with six runs thanks to a triple by Esquivel, a double by Bruce, a single by Elizabeth Stoufer, a single by Truelove and a two-run single by Anna Marie Sternisha. The final five runs crossed the plate in the fifth on a sac fly by Bruce, a double by West, a single by Baylie Ainsworth and a single by Sternisha. Alex Jeter started and got the win, throwing four innings and allowing just three hits while striking out two. Sawyers struck out the side in the fifth around a walk and a hit batter.

UP NEXT

            CBC looks to continue their perfect start to conference play tomorrow with a doubleheader against Harris-Stowe State. First pitch from Stars Park Softball Field is scheduled for noon.
