Mustangs Drop Pair of Close Games To Evangel

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Playing at home for the second consecutive Friday, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Valor of Evangel University this afternoon at City of Colleges Park. CBC (7-5) nearly came back in game one before losing a lead to nearly come back in game two against EU (4-0), losing 5-4 and 9-8 in 10 innings.

GAME ONE – EVANGEL 5, CBC 4

The Valor jumped on the board first, tallying a single run in the first and four in the fifth and led 5-0 after five innings. CBC finally broke through in the sixth, plating four runs courtesy of a fielder's choice off the bat of Kori Truelove, an RBI triple from Lauren Anderson, an RBI single by Savannah Sanford and an error. CBC had two on and two outs in the seventh and couldn't cash in on the walk off opportunity.

GAME TWO – EVANGEL 9, CBC 8 (10 INNINGS)

The Mustangs got on the board first in game two courtesy of Abi West's fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to make it 2-0 after one. The score stayed that way until the fifth when Kori Truelove singled home a run to make it 3-0. Evangel broke through in the seventh, scoring 4 runs in the inning and putting CBC into a must score to send the game into extras scenario. A double by Anderson tied the score at four and sent the game into extra innings for the first time this season and it is just the sixth time in program history that a game has gone at least 10 innings. In the eighth, Evangel plated three runs to make it 7-4 but CBC answered right back, getting RBI singles from Ysabella Esquivel and Kinley Johnson and an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 7-7 after eight. Neither team would score in the ninth and Evangel got two in the top of the 10th to make it 9-7. A sac fly from Esquivel in the 10th made it 9-8 but the Mustangs couldn't push the winning run across.
