Softball Splits on Day Two To Move Into AMC Tournament Semifinals

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Columbia, Mo. – Looking to carry some momentum from an American Midwest Conference Tournament opening win over Williams Baptist, the #3 seeded Central Baptist College softball Mustangs took on the #2 seeded Missouri Baptist Spartans in a winner's bracket game at Antimi Softball Complex. CBC (34-17) lost to MBU (35-16) 3-2 in game one before ending William Woods' season 5-1 in the second game.

GAME TWO – MBU 3, CBC 2

A pitcher's dual between the Mustangs and Spartans happened in game one, resulting in the third one-run contest between the two this season. MBU scored all three of their runs on a home run in the second to lead 3-0 after two. CBC got a run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Maddie Thompson and Katie Smith brought in a run with a ground out in the fifth. MBU made a pitching change in that inning and CBC got only one base runner following the change. Averie Ayers threw a complete game and scattered six hits and three runs with three walks and five Ks in the loss.

GAME THREE – CBC 5, WWU 1

Neither team scored in the first three innings before WWU finally pushed through with a home run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. CBC's bats stayed quiet until the sixth, when Allison Wagle doubled home Ayers to tie the game at one. CBC grabbed the lead with four runs in the seventh thanks to back-to-back RBI groundouts, first from Madeline Bruce and then from Ayers, followed by a two-run homer from Katie Smith, her third of the season. Emily Cole was brilliant in the circle, earning win number five after throwing a complete game three-hitter, allowing just one run with a pair of walks and a couple of Ks.
