#MustangsWin! Softball Sweeps Stephens And Gets Another No-Hitter!
Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director
Columbia, Mo. – Averie Ayers fired her second career no-hitter today for Central Baptist College softball as they finished their six-game road trip this afternoon with an American Midwest Conference doubleheader against the Stephens Stars at Battle High School. Ayers' no-hitter came in CBC's (26-16, 12-4) 9-0 run-rule win in game two after they took game one over SC (15-22, 7-10 AMC) 5-3 in nine innings.
Ayers' no-hitter is the second of the season for CBC after Hannah Work also fired one against Harris-Stowe State back on March 27. She joins an elite list of pitchers that includes Jessica Bock (seven solo, one combined), Casey Hammons (two solo, one combined), Jessica Sheldon (three solo, one combined), Shanice Murry (two solo) and Cali Lankford (one solo, two combined) that have thrown multiple no-hitters in their careers.
GAME ONE – CBC 5, STEPHENS 3 (NINE INNINGS)
CBC got on the board first in the first on an RBI single by Allison Wagle to make it 1-0. Stephens would tie the game in the third and then take a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Maddie Thompson tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and the game remained deadlocked at two until the ninth when Kori Truelove scored on a passed ball to give CBC a 3-2 lead and Ysabella Esquivel gave CBC their final runs with a two-run single. A home run by Stephens in the bottom of the ninth wasn't enough as Hannah Work earned her 10th win of the season by throwing a complete game and allowing just three runs on seven hits with two walks to become just the fifth pitcher in program history to reach the 30-win mark in her career. Work also became the sixth pitcher in program history to record 10 wins or more in a season twice.
GAME TWO – CBC 9, STEPHENS 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
Ayers got all the run support she needed in the first inning, as Allison Wagle drove in three with a triple to make it 3-0, Heather Hoffman singled home a run to make it 4-0, Madalyn Tubbs hit a sac fly to make it 5-0 and Jordyn Frederic singled in a run to put CBC up 6-0 in the first. The final three runs for the Mustangs came in the second when Kori Truelove launched her third home run of the season, a three-run shot, to make it 9-0. Ayers faced the minimum over her complete game, striking out 10 and joining Work in the double digit win club with her 10th victory. She also becomes the seventh pitcher with multiple 10+ win seasons.
