Mustangs Split Doubleheader With Spartans

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Playing their first American Midwest Conference doubleheader at home this season, Central Baptist College softball hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University this afternoon at Farris Field on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas. CBC (14-14, 4-2 AMC) split with MBU (20-10, 7-1 AMC), winning 4-3 in extra innings in game one and losing 2-1 in extra innings in game two.

GAME ONE – CBC 4, MBU 3 (EIGHT INNINGS)

Missouri Baptist got on the scoreboard first in the first before CBC responded in the bottom half. A throwing error by the Spartans tied the score at one and a single by Lauren Anderson made it 2-1 in the first. MBU would retake the lead in the second on back-to-back home runs and the score would stay 3-2 until the seventh inning. In the seventh, Jordyn Frederic would single to shortstop and Savannah Sanford would come all the way around from second base to tie the score at three and send the game into extra innings. Katie Smith tripled with one out, and, following an intentional walk to Allison Wagle, scored on a wild pitch to give CBC the walk-off win. Hannah Work earned the win, throwing a complete game, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs, but none after the second with a pair of walks.

GAME TWO – MBU 2, CBC 1 (NINE INNINGS)

A pitcher's duel broke out in game two as MBU starter Alexandria Cafolla and CBC hurler Averie Ayers combined to strikeout 23 batters. Neither team scored until the fourth inning when MBU took a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived, however, as Sanford singled home Anderson with the tying run to make it 1-1 after four. The score would stay that way until the ninth when MBU homered again to take a 2-1 lead and CBC couldn't muster anything in the ninth to win.
