Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

St. Louis, Mo. – Returning to the field for the first time in 22 days, Central Baptist College softball was at Stars Park this afternoon to open their American Midwest Conference schedule against the Eutectics of UHSP. CBC (9-13, 1-1 AMC) split the doubleheader with UHSP (2-5, 1-1 AMC), falling on a walk-off in game one 8-7 before winning game two 19-7.

GAME ONE – UHSP 8, CBC 7

CBC jumped on UHSP early in game one, scoring twice in the first on back-to-back doubles from Madeline Bruce and Allison Wagle to make it 2-0. The Eutectics would push a run across in the first and then three in the third and take a 4-2 lead after three innings. CBC continued to chip away, plating a run on a Katie Smith double to make it 4-3 in the fifth. The Mustangs retook the lead in the sixth on an RBI triple by Ysabella Esquivel followed by an RBI single by Jordyn Frederic to make it 5-4. UHSP would plate three in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-5. In the seventh, CBC would tie the score at seven thanks to a double from Kori Truelove and a single by Heather Hoffman. Unfortunately, UHSP would get a walk-off single with the bases loaded to hand CBC their first ever defeat against the Eutectics.

GAME TWO – CBC 19, UHSP 7

CBC started quickly again in game two, scoring runs on singles by Hoffman and Caroline Byers to make it 2-0 in the second. UHSP would tie the game at two in the third before CBC pounced on the Eutectics for six in the fourth. Wagle started the inning with a single and moved to third on a single by Truelove. Following a steal by Truelove, Hoffman gave CBC the lead with a groundout to short to make it 3-2. Lauren Anderson chased home Truelove with an RBI single to make it 4-2 and the Mustangs would load the bases following singles by Byers and Frederic. A wild pitch would score Anderson to make it 5-2 and a sac fly off the bat of pinch hitter Sydney Weiser made it 6-2. Averie Ayers would follow that with an RBI triple and she would come home on a wild pitch to make it 8-2. UHSP would plate three in the sixth to make the score 8-5 before the Mustang offense exploded in the seventh, scoring 11 times on seven hits to lead 19-5 after the half inning. Anderson drew a one-out walk and pinch runner Baylie Ainsworth moved to second on a single by Byers. A single by Frederic would load the bases and Weiser earned her second RBI of the game by walking. A walk to Ayers followed, plating another run, and following subs by the Eutectics, Katie Smith doubled to score a pair of runs. That was followed by a two-run triple by Wagle, who had four hits and finished a home run short of the cycle and a double by Truelove. Ainsworth would then single home Truelove and Melanie Phillips collected her first RBI as a Mustang with a pinch hit single to score Ainsworth. The scoring was rounded out when Esquivel double home a pair. CBC would allow two in the ninth, but no further damage would follow. Hannah Work earned the win, allowing eight hits and five runs with three walks and three strikeouts in five-and-one-third innings. Esquivel pitched the final inning-and-two thirds, allowing two runs on four hits.
