Softball Wins Two Games At Gulf Coast Invitational

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Gulf Shores, Ala. – Returning to the field for the first time in eight days, Central Baptist College softball was at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex today for the first three games of the Gulf Coast Invitational. CBC (7-11) won two out of their three games, beating Texas A&M-San Antonio and Faulkner in the bookend games, sandwiched between a close loss to Baker.

Pitching was the story for CBC as Averie Ayers, Hannah Work and Emily Cole combined to throw 21 innings and allow only three runs, with all three coming in the second game against Work.

GAME ONE – CBC 5, TEXAS A&M-SAN ANTONIO 0

The Mustangs jumped on the Jaguars quickly in game one as Allison Wagle cashed in again, this time with an RBI double in the first to make it 1-0. Savannah Sanford would cross the plate in the second on a throwing error and Katie Smith scored on another error in the third to make it 3-0. Heather Hoffman plated two in the fifth to give Ayers all the insurance she needed. Ayers pitched the first shutout of the season for the Mustangs, allowing just five hits while walking one with six Ks in a dominant effort.

GAME TWO – BAKER 3, CBC 1

Wagle came through again in the second game, putting CBC up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first. Work made the lead stand up until the sixth inning when Baker plated two and added an insurance run in the seventh for the final tally. Work didn't deserve the loss that she got, allowing just five hits and three runs (two earned) with five walks and four strikeouts.

GAME THREE – CBC 7, FAULKNER 0

Neither team scored in the first two innings and CBC finally broke out in the third. Wagle singled and Katie Smith would score on an error and Lauren Anderson plated a second run with a groundout. An error in the fifth extended the lead to 3-0 and Ysabella Esquivel followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0 followed by a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead after five. A two-run single by Hoffman in the sixth brought the score final and solidified a solid day on the mound for the pitchers. Cole threw a complete game four-hitter, walking two and striking out two in the win.
