CBC Drops Heartbreaker to WBU

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Conway, Ark. – Wrapping up the first half of American Midwest Conference play tonight, Central Baptist College men's basketball hosted the Williams Baptist University Eagles inside A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (6-13, 3-4 AMC) had an eight point lead with 1:19 to play before allowing WBU (15-2, 5-1 AMC) to come back and win 80-79.

Five players finished in double figures scoring for the Mustangs led by MacArthur Reed, Jr., and his 17 points. Derek Magwood had 15 off the bench with Jason Hunt scoring 12 and Tyler Johnson and Dalton Alexander III both contributing 11.

GAME FLOW

The game featured six ties and 13 lead changes. WBU led 37-34 at the break, but CBC fought back, tying the game at 50 with 13:22 to play. WBU then hit back-to-back threes to make the deficit six before CBC went on a 7-0 run to lead 57-56 with 10:14 to play. The game continued to jostle back-and-forth until a three by Alexander with 5:09 to go tied the game at 68, and, following the final media timeout, a Magwood layup followed by a Reed layup put CBC ahead 72-68 with 3:15 to go. Following a WBU basket, Magwood was fouled shooting a three and made all three free throws to push the lead to 75-70. A missed layup and foul followed and Alexander canned a pair of free throws to make it 77-70 with 2:01 to play. A free throw by the Eagles and a Johnson layup made it 79-71 before WBU went on a 9-0 run, helped by three misses at the free throw line by the Mustangs and a running layup with 1.2 left gave CBC the unfortunate loss.
