Mustangs Lose Heartbreaker To Wiley Late

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Marshall, Texas – Playing for the first time away from Reddin Fieldhouse this season, Central Baptist College men's basketball took on the Wildcats of Wiley College at Alumni Gymnasium. In the second meeting in 11 days between the two schools, CBC (3-1) trailed at the half, fought back to retake the lead in the second half and missed a free throw late to seal a 74-73 loss to WC (3-1).

Jalen Adams led three Mustangs in double figures scoring with 19 points while Deshawn Corprew chipped in with 16 and Brevin Brimble added 12. Corprew was also the leading rebounder with eight while also handing out a team-best six assists, something that CBC accomplished as a team 21 times in 28 makes. Free throw shooting was the difference in the contest as Wiley made 12 of their 19 while CBC made only four of 11.

GAME RECAP

Corprew began the scoring with a jumper 1:11 into the contest and CBC would hold the lead for the next 18:09 until Wiley took the lead with 40 seconds left in the half at 33-32. CBC did not make a field goal the final 3:21 of the first half and went to the locker room down 36-32.

Wiley stretched CBC's deficit to eight with 18:31 left before Adams, who hit five of the team's 13 threes, cut the deficit back to five. The Mustangs were kept at bay until the 8:19 mark, when a layup by Gabe Johnson tied the score at 57. The teams would then trade baskets until a three from Johnson with 5:36 left gave CBC a 65-62 lead. Neither team scored for the next 2:12 until, following a free throw, Wiley tied the game back up at 65 with 3:24 left. Brimble canned one of his four threes on the next possession for the Mustangs to retake the lead at 68-65 with under three minutes to play. With the score tied at 70, Wiley got a layup with 34 seconds left to lead 72-70. After a turnover and a foul, Wiley committed a technical foul and Adams easily made two shots to tie it at 72 with eight seconds left. Wiley would then give themselves the lead back at the free throw line before fouling Corprew with one second left. Corprew would make the first free throw to set up drama on the second, which he missed as the clock hit 0:00.

Next up for CBC is a return to A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon for a meeting with the Eagles of Texas A&M-Texarkana. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
