Mustangs Split With Owls

            Columbia, Mo. – Opening American Midwest Conference play on the road, Central Baptist College baseball was at Rock Bridge High School today for a doubleheader against the Owls of William Woods. CBC (16-7, 1-1 AMC) split the twin bill, taking game one 7-1 before dropping a 1-0 loss to WWU (12-13-1, 1-1 AMC) in game two.

            Gram Middleton and Jackson Pope combined to make history in game one, throwing the seventh no-hitter in program history. It was the third combined no-hitter and the second no-hitter on the road against William Woods. CBC lost the previous no-no, 1-0, in extra innings back on March 2, 2018.

GAME ONE – CBC 7, WWU 1 (SEVEN INNINGS)

            Woods took the early lead, scoring a run on a groundout in the second. A sac fly by Austin Teal in the third tied the score at one and a wild pitch in the fifth gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. CBC blew the game open in the seventh, plating five in the inning. Ian Velazquez brought in the first run with a sac fly to make it 3-1 which was followed by a single and an error off the bat of Luke McBride to make it 5-1. Cade McBride would then drive in a run with a single and he would score on a throwing error by the catcher to bring the score to its final margin. Middleton threw six-and-two-thirds hitless innings, walking seven and striking out 10 for the second time this season. Pope recorded the final out to make history.

GAME TWO – WWU 1, CBC 0 (NINE INNINGS)

            The lone run of the second game crossed the plate in the second inning on a single. CBC only got six hits in the contest and left runners stranded on third base three times in the final four innings. Julio Escobar made his first career start, going four innings and allowing three hits and one earned run with a pair of strikeouts. Pope finished the second game, also throwing four innings, and allowing three hits with four strikeouts.

UP NEXT

            The rubber match between the Mustangs and the Owls is scheduled for Firley Field in Fulton tomorrow. The nine inning contest is slated for noon.
