#MustangsWin! Baseball Sweeps Harris-Stowe on Record Day in St. Louis!

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

St. Louis, Mo. – Looking to carry momentum into their final American Midwest Conference road series of the season, Central Baptist College baseball was at Hornets Park this afternoon for a doubleheader with the Harris-Stowe State Hornets. CBC (19-24, 6-11 AMC) pounded the baseball for 29 runs and 30 hits in a sweep of HSSU (6-31, 2-15 AMC), winning 11-3 and 18-11.

Several CBC players tied records during the doubleheader, especially in the second game. Steven Stewart moved into a tie for ninth on the all-time hits list with Jalin Lawson (160) while also moving into third all-time on the runs scored list with 136, two behind Josh Buczek for second. Additionally, Stewart is also just one RBI away from becoming the 10th player all-time with 100 career RBIs, while he is just one shy of being hit by 80 pitches, which is a record he owns, and became one of 22 players to score four or more runs in the game (Nick Aide also did it in game two.) Gabe Walker had six RBIs in game two and became the ninth player in program history with at least six RBIs in a game. A.J. Serrano drew four bases on balls in game two to tie the single-game record and see that occur for the eighth time in program history. Stewart was hit by multiple pitches for the 11th time in his career while Mason Sellers became the fourth reliever to strikeout eight in a relief appearance in program history.

GAME ONE – CBC 11, HSSU 3 (FINAL – SEVEN INNINGS)

Neither team scored for the first two innings until CBC broke through in the third. Walker would single in the first run of the game and a two-run double by Serrano made it 3-0 through two-and-a-half. HSSU would tie the game with a home run in the third  and CBC broke the game open in the sixth courtesy of a double by Luke McBride, a sac fly by Jaxon Kirkhuff and an RBI single by Stewart to make it 6-3. The Mustangs would put the game way out of reach with five in the seventh on a three-run homer by Serrano, his third of the season, and a two-run single by Luke McBride. Gram Middleton got his third win of the season, allowing only three hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts. Mason Sellers collected his second save in the first game, allowing just one hit and striking out three in two innings of work.

GAME TWO – CBC 18, HSSU 11

A wild affair broke out in game two that saw only two scoreless innings by either team, the fifth and the seventh. CBC took the lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Stewart before HSSU homered in the bottom half to give CBC a 2-1 deficit after one. A bases loaded triple by Stewart and a two-run double by Cey Barkume made it 6-2 in the second and HSSU would cut the lead to 6-4 in the third. CBC would plate five in the fourth to make it 11-4 in an inning that included a two-run home by Cey Barkume, his third and a sac fly by Ruben Hernandez. HSSU would make it 11-9 in the bottom of the fourth and CBC would put the game away in the sixth on a double by Austin Teal that made it 12-9. Solo homers by the Hornets in the sixth and the eighth cut it 12-11 but CBC would plate six in the ninth to make it final. Kyle Bass would homer, his second of the season in the inning and that would be followed by a two-run double by Barkume, a single by Serrano, and bases loaded walks to both Hernandez and McBride. Sellers earned the win in game two, allowing just one run on three hits with the 8 Ks for his third win of the season.
