Walnut Ridge, Ark. – Looking to win their first American Midwest Conference series of the season, Central Baptist College baseball was at Shell Field today for the rubber game against the Eagles of Williams Baptist. CBC (13-12, 2-1 AMC) took care of business, downing WBU (13-13, 1-2 AMC) 10-3 in the final game of the series.
The Mustangs pounded out 12 hits in the finale against three Williams Baptist pitchers. Jaxon Kirkhuff started and earned the win, going five innings and allowing five hits and three runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Jackson Pope tied a program single-season record for saves, earning his fourth save by pitching the final four innings and allowing just one hit with one walk and four strikeouts.
CBC got off to a fast start, scoring three in the first on a double by Gabe Walker, a fielder's choice off the bat of Benito Martinez and a bases loaded walk issued to Cey Barkume. WBU made it 3-2 after one before Barkume added an insurance run to make it 4-2 in the third. WBU would cut the lead to one again in the fifth, 4-3 before CBC blew it open with three in the seven. Martinez brought in a run on a sac fly and a run also scored via an error and Austin Teal brought in a run on an infield single later in the inning to make it 7-3. The Mustangs would tack on three more in the ninth thanks to an RBI single from A.J. Serrano, a steal of home by Gabe Walker and an RBI single by Teal.
CBC is back on the road on Monday for a doubleheader with Baptist Bible. First pitch against the Patriots in Ozark, Mo., is slated for 1 p.m.
