Blue Mountain, Miss. – Heading to the road for the first time this season, Central Baptist College baseball was at Toppers Field this afternoon for a doubleheader against the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University. CBC (2-2) lost both contests to BMCU (5-1), dropping game one 7-1 before losing game two 4-3 on a walkoff single in the ninth inning.
GAME ONE – BMCU 7, CBC 1 (SEVEN INNINGS)
Neither team scored in the first two innings as starting pitching dominated early. BMCU broke through in the third inning, plating five runs off starter Gram Middleton to lead 5-0 after three. They would plate one more in the fourth and one in the sixth to round out their scoring. The lone CBC run came on an RBI single by Ruben Hernandez in the sixth. Middleton got the loss, going three innings and allowing five runs on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Ben Slate walked the only batters he faced, allowing one earned run. Jackson Lindsey and Landon Hitchcock combined for two innings and allowed just two hits with three combined strikeouts (one for Lindsey and two for Hitchcock) and Cole Garcia gave up a run on a hit in the sixth.
GAME TWO – BMCU 4, CBC 3 (NINE INNINGS)
In the second game, Blue Mountain struck first, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning to lead 1-0. CBC would take the lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Kyle Bass that made it 2-1. BMCU would tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth and retake the lead 3-2 in the fifth. A fielder's choice off the bat of Ruben Hernandez brought in the tying run in the seventh before BMCU won the game with a single in the ninth. Jaxon Kirkhuff made his Mustang debut on the mound and didn't factor in the decision, pitching the first five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. The loss went to reliever Jackson Pope who pitched three-and-two-thirds and allowed only the winning run on three hits with a walk and three Ks.
